Travel the Gunflint Trail and you immediately notice the prominence of forests. The Trail begins in a mixed hardwood/conifer forest, changes to a maple hardwood forest for a brief time, then to a mixed conifer/hardwood forest, and finally, a boreal pine forest.

This landscape of forest and the numerous lakes and rivers reflect changes in the natural world and the impact of humans. The forests are home to a diverse group of mammals and birds.

Hiking Trails are scattered throughout the area, and in winter hundreds of kilometers groomed, tracked cross-country ski trails are available.
